Alex Carey Shines As South Australia End 29-Year Sheffield Shield Title Drought

Test podium Alex Carey struck a superb century against Queensland while Australia-Meridion was finished the most successful fourth round race in a final of Sheffield Shield to end a 29-year-old drought on Saturday. Having needed 270 points to Karen Rolton Oval in Adélaide, Australia-Meridional was in trouble early on the fourth day at 28-3 before Carey combined with Jason Sangha in a winning partnership of 202 points. Carey, who was in the form of a strong striker this season, dropped by 105 with the result of a formality despite the loss of three late counters.
Sangha finished undefeated on 126 to seal the victory with four titles, hitting the winning round while longtime fans of South Australia have run on the ground to celebrate.
The highest previous pursuit to win a shield final was the 239-2 of Victoria against New South Wales in 1991.
It was the 14th title of South Australia and the first since 1995-1996 to finish a memorable season having triumphed at the beginning of the month in one-day national competition.
Australia-meridional had finished in the lower failure of the shield table at each of the previous seven seasons.
“A fairly difficult work to continue 270, which was a really difficult score. We had to play our best,” said Southern Australia captain Nathan McSweeney, who previously played for Queensland.
“In the past, we have relied on one or two players to really wear us, but this year, so many people have risen at major times.”
Australia-meridional had an early hold of the five-day decision maker after taking advantage of the favorable sewing sets to implement Queensland for only 95 in their first sleeves.
Quick Brendan Doggett, who was part of the Australian test team during the recent series against India, said 6-31 while Queensland collapsed to the lowest total total of a shield.
Australia-meridional took an advance of 176 points at first glance after Jake Lehmann, the son of the former test drummer and former coach of Australia Darren Lehmann, at the top with 102 of 151 balls.
The Queensland appeared ready for a heavy defeat before the second centuries of Jack Clayton and Jack Wildermuth did not remove their chances.
But Doggett, who was part of the last winning team of the Queensland title in 2021, took another transport of five counters to limit the advance of Queensland while the surface was flat in the cooking sun.
The two teams were without several stars, including Travis Head and Xavier Bartlett, who play in the Indian Premier League.
