You seem the sustainable stranger in Bollywood
I am. Look at the cinema we do! Tell me about Hindi films in the past ten years of which we can be proud. When I need to be proud of Indian cinema, I return to Guru Dutt, V. Shantaram, K AIF, Bimal Roy and the start of Raj Kapoor. Look at the waste we do these days! Even the so-called crossing / multiplex cinema…. There is not a single film that I would like to see. I hope that the new batch of filmmakers will make the films that I would like to see.

You didn’t like Lagaan And Devdas?
No, I have excellent reservations about Devdas, although it is made by someone very close to me. I liked Lagaan. This is the only film I liked in recent years. But listen, come back in time. You will see Mehboob Khan, Raj Kapoor and Bimal Roy going out with classics during the same year.

So, is Los Angeles your ultimate destination as a filmmaker?
My ultimate destination is to make an excellent cinema. To a certain extent, I have already done so. I have not associated myself with remote goals. In the past year, I was completely contained by focusing on my production Munnabhai Mbbs. I am so proud of this film. I want to move 5 in Hollywood. This is the kind of subject I can’t do in Mumbai. These are two people who play chess, one of them is dead. Do you understand my point? Do you know what happened when I used the Fadeout technique Parked? Many viewers thought there was a projection problem. But I still love India too much to get away from me. At the age of 23, I had the opportunity to live when Parked was nominated for an Oscar.

What did the Oscar mean for you at this age?
I was so arrogant. You will not find any of my awards in my house. Rewards do not mean anything to me. I have so much for Parked. The golden peacock for Parked meant a lot because my father was alive to see me get it. I remember going to a restaurant in Delhi the next day and asked for my tea and samosa bill to be struck off because my photo was on the first page of a newspaper. I had no money! The only other price that meant something was the filmfare Award for the best director. My mother was sitting with me…. I was nominated alongside Yash Chopra for ChandniSubhash Ghai for Ram Lakhan And Sooraj Barjatya for Maine Pyar Kiya. When they announced my name, I thought it was Yash Chopra. My mother told me it was me! I went to the stage with her.

What does money mean for you?
As a student in economics, I know that the true value of money is only in its productive use. I use my income to produce the kind of movies I think. I have never compromised in any of my films, whether 1942 (A love story) Or Cashmere mission.

But did you have to restructure the role of Hrithik Roshan in Cashmere mission After having become a star overnight?
I would not call this a compromise. When Hrithik became a success, I had to give him an introductory scene by which the public knows that the hero had arrived. I had threw an actor. But he became a star with an image. And I had to do justice to his image. When I do Yagna With Amicitabh Bachchan, he comes to me with the luggage of his image. Even if I work with Dustin Hoffman in Hollywood, I have to keep his image in mind. I hate compromise. Whether it is Sanjay Bhansali or Raju Hirani, I do not want anyone associated with me to make compromises.

How do you assess yourself as a human being?
I have a big opinion on myself. I must tell you what happened to me in a talk show recently … During the conversation, a guy approached me on the camera. He looked familiar. When he said, “But for this man, I would be dead”, I recalled how this guy was bleeding to death on a road after an accident. I had picked it up and took him to the hospital. Then I returned to my set of 1942: A love story And forgot the incident. Now do you know why I have such an opinion of myself? But do you know what is the real tragedy of the human race? We are rented for something we should all do by instinct.
