Bollywood’s Diwali releases, Thamma and Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat, to face TOUGH fight from regional films; exhibitors gear up for screen sharing issues : Bollywood News
One week left for the horror comedy to arrive Thamma and the intense romantic saga Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat in cinemas on the occasion of Diwali. This is the time when regional films generally refrain from releasing their films. But this year will be an exception. The two Diwali Hindi releases will face competition from Marathi, Gujarati and Punjabi films.

Premachi Goshta 2the sequel to the much-loved 2013 Marathi film Premachi Goshtastarring Atul Kulkarni and Sagarika Ghatge, will hit theaters on October 21. The second part features Swapnil Joshi, Lalit Prabhakar, Rucha Vaidya and Ridhima Pandit. The trailer was well received due to its humorous moments and a never-before-seen twist in the story. It will be distributed by PVR Inox Pictures.
What’s interesting is that there was another movie, Punha Shivajiraje Bhosaledirected by Mahesh Manjrekar, which was all set to hit the screens during the Festival of Lights. However, the film which appealed to the general public has now been postponed to October 31.
Gujarati cinema will present Chaniya Toli. It is backed by Anand Pandit Motion Pictures and stars Yash Soni, Ragi Jani, Nikita Sharma, Netri Trivedi, Heena Jaikishan, Sohni Bhatt and others along with Janki Bodiwala of Shaitaan (2024) fame in a special appearance. The film tells the story of a group of village women who rob a bank, leading to madness and chaos. The trailer of ‘Gujarati Money Heist’ has received a huge response and exhibitors in Gujarat are expecting the film to surprise.
Finally, the Punjabi film God, God, Chaa 2backed by Zee Studios, will also release on Diwali. This is the second part of God, God, Chaa (2023) and stars Ammy Virk, Tania, Gurjazz, Gitaj Bindrakhia, Nike, and Dhillon and others. Both parts of this series are directed by Vijay Kumar Arora, who recently directed Son of Sardaar 2.
Industry circles and exhibitors are predicting an intense battle for screen space this Diwali. A trade expert observed, “Screen clashes are common when two major Hindi films are released together. We have just seen this happen with Kantar And Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari last week. This holiday season, a similar fight is expected, with Thamma And Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat competing for the best slots. What makes things trickier is the strong regional programming; Marathi, Gujarati and Punjabi films are coming with big support and a built-in audience. Their presence will amplify competition in their respective territories, and exhibitors may need to strike a delicate balance when allocating exhibitions.
A single screen operator from Maharashtra noted, “Marathi films have been released on Diwali in the past. Bombay Pune Bombay 2which is led by Premachi Goshta 2 director Satish Rajawade, came to Diwali 2015 with Katyar Kaljat Ghusalidespite the big problem Prem Ratan Dhan Payo scheduled for release on the same day. However, everything was managed well. I don’t see it as a problem this time either, although I don’t deny that things have changed a lot in terms of screen sharing tactics over the last ten years.
