Bombay High Court dismisses copyright claim against Dream Girl 2; calls allegations ‘far-fetched’ : Bollywood News
The High Court of Bombay threw a copyright violation plaid against Balaji’s TV movies during his comedy in 2023 Dream Girl 2Judging that the film script is entirely different from the applicant’s work and that the claim for a violation of confidence was “wacky”.

The case was tabled by the writer Ashim Kumar Bagchi, who said that the Ayushmann Khurrana-Starrer was based on his scenario entitled Kal Kisne Dekha and later to re -register as The show must continue. Bagchi alleged that his story – a comedy of change of gender on a man pretending to be a woman and sailing hilarious situations whenever her true identity was in danger – had been shared with confidence with one of the writers credited with the film years ago. He argued that elements of his work had been used without authorization.
However, the Court observed that what Bagchi sought was equivalent to a monopoly on generic ideas and common comic tropes – such as erroneous identity and disguise – which cannot be protected by copyright law. These elements, according to the court, were such as “in stock” and “non -original” and therefore not eligible for protection. Finding no substantive similarity between the two works, the judges rejected the case and ordered Bagchi to pay RS 1 Lakh each in fresh for the TV movi of Balaji and another defendant.
Directed by Raaj Shaandilyaa, Dream Girl 2 is the continuation of the 2019 blockbuster Dream girl. The film sees Ayushmann Khurrana resume his role as Karam, who once again faces the female character of “Pooja”, leading to a series of comic chaos and romantic misunderstandings. With Ananya Panday as the female head alongside Paresh Rawal, Vijay Raaz and Rajpal Yadav, the film was a commercial success, cementing its place as one of the most popular comedy franchises in Bollywood. The film was a spiritual successor to the 2019 comedy with Ayushmann.
