The 100th birthday of one of the greatest personalities in cinema of all time, Guru Dutt, is celebrated on July 9. He died at the age of only 38, but the contribution he made to the cinema was unforgettable. No wonder 60 years after his death, he continues to speak and remember. Some believe that he committed suicide when some do not believe this theory at all. DEVI DUTT, brother of Guru DUTT, spoke at length with Filmfare 9 years ago on the reasons why he was sure that his brother did not end his own life.

In the April 2016 issue, a detailed interview with Devi Dutt was published in which he talked about the beginnings of Guru Dutt, his relationship with Geeta Dutt and much more. At one point, he explained what happened on October 9, 1964, one day before Guru Dutt was found dead.
Devi Dutt said: “After Sahib bibi aur ghulam (1962), Guru Dutt and Bhabhi (Geeta Dutt) had corrected. It was decided that the whole family would remain together at 48 Pali Hill once it has been refurbished. On October 9, 1964, he was in his studio with Tanuja, Rehman and director Shaeed Latif for his production Baharein Phir Bhi Aayegi. But Mala Ji (Mala Sinha) had been stuck in Madras. Thus, the shooting has been postponed. Bhabhi had gone to the children’s school for PTA and was supposed to send (their sons) Tarun and Arun in the evening. We left for us in the car. He asked me to buy kite and from Manjha to Bandra because he wanted to pilot kite with children this weekend. Then we stopped in Charag Din in Colaba. He bought clothes for boys and also for me.
He continued: “Then we stopped at Kanji Bhai Broker’s House in Marine Lines to collect whiskey bottles. Guru Dutt asked him to recover his money from investors because he wanted to import colorful actions for Kaneez (a film he was supposed to make). When we got home, he went to the kitchen and started preparing omelettes. He said he would cook more often when we all live together. He said that we, the brothers, would occupy the 9th and 10th floors, from where we were looking at the sunset every night. At that time, we walked in our authorized accountant, Gole Saab. He informed Guru Dutt of the IT service for the computer service for current taxes in the past two years. They entered a stormy argument. Gole Saab warned that the IT service could attack the studio, the office and the house at any time. Guru Dutt asked me to go home.
DEVI DUTT then added: “Going out, I met Abrar Alvi. I asked him to transmit Bhabhi’s message to Guru Dutt – that she wouldn’t send the children because it was late. It was my last evening with Guru Dutt. The next day, he was no longer. Guru Dutt faced serious income tax problems.
