“Bollywood actor Suniel Shetty moves the Bombay High Court to protect his personality rights. The actor said that many social media pages and websites are using his image to promote their business. The actor also cited a photo doctoring case with his grandchild,” Bar and Bench reported.

The move comes amid a growing trend of celebrities filing lawsuits to safeguard their personal and business identities. In recent times, stars such as Aishwarya Rai, Abhishek Bachchan, Amitabh Bachchan, Karan Johar and Akkineni Nagarjuna have also approached courts to protect their personality rights from online misuse.

Earlier this month, the Bombay High Court passed an order protecting veteran singer Asha Bhosle from unauthorized use of her identity. The court prohibited several entities from exploiting his name, images or voice, explicitly including manipulations using artificial intelligence (AI). The judgment highlights that allowing AI tools to reproduce a celebrity’s voice without their consent constitutes a violation of identity rights.

“Personality rights of individuals, in simple terms, involve the right to control and protect the exploitation of their image, name, likeness or other attributes of their personality, in addition to the commercial gains that may accrue therefrom. Personality rights may be located in the autonomy of individuals to permit or deny exploitation of the likeness of other attributes of their personality,” the Delhi High Court had said while upholding the rights by Aishwarya Rai.

Personality rights give individuals legal authority over the public and commercial use of their identity. These rights protect unique attributes such as image, voice, signature or slogans. They are broadly divided into the right of publicity, which protects against unauthorized commercial use, and the right to privacy, which protects individuals from misuse through deepfakes, doctored images, fabricated claims, or intimate content.
