The political drama, written and produced by Agnihotri, revisits one of the darkest and most debated chapters in the history of India: the great murders of Calcutta of 1946 and the riots of Noakhali. Defeating events as a “genocide of the Bengali Hindus”, the film alleges that these violent episodes have been deliberately removed or under-declared in traditional stories. With a cast star that includes Mithun Chakraborty, Pallavi Joshi, Anupam Kher, Darshan Kumar, Saswata Chatterjee and Simrat Kaur, among others, the film had been planned to attract attention both for its content and its political nuances.

However, the controversy has deepened when the BJP’s computer cell chief Amit Malviya accused the government of the Trinamool Congress led by Mamata Banerjee to unofficially ban the film. Taking on X (formerly Twitter), Malviya wrote: “Bengal files, a film on the genocide of Bengalis Hindu, released in the nation world. “”

The Trinamool Congress, however, denied any role in the non-liberation of the film, insisting that the decision was only with theater owners and multiplex operators. Party leaders argued that the government has nothing to do with it.

To contradict this, actress and producer Pallavi Joshi alleged that the government of Western Bengal, including police, had threatened theater owners to prevent projections. She revealed that she had officially seduced the president of India to ensure the release of the film in the state.
