Codirigated by Tanushree Das and Saumyananda Sahi in their beginnings as a director, Baksho Bondi Understands Tillotama Shome like Maya, in the context of a dusty suburb of Kolkata, weaving a powerful story of love, resilience and the silent force of a woman who works in her daily life.
The projection of the opening evening is scheduled for August 14 in Melbourne, giving the tone to the celebration of the festival of daring, superimposed and deeply human stories of India.
Tillotama Shome, reflecting on the trip of the film, shared: “Baksho Bondi is incredibly close to my heart. Playing Maya was a lesson to listen to silences, to discover strength in small acts and to understand how silent resilience shapes the lives of women in a world that often neglects them. After Berlin, bringing the history of Maya to Melbourne feels special because of the incredible strength and the inclusion spirit which radiates Mitu, the director of the Festival of the Festival of the Indian film of Melbourne. This film is a love letter to women who work, with dusty afternoon at Barrackpore and the courage that persists quietly even when no one looks. »»
Mitu Bhowmick Lange, director of the Melbourne Indian Film Festival, added: “We are honored to open the IFFM 2025 with Baksho Bondi – Shadowbox, a film that illustrates the strength of independent Indian cinema while approaching the themes that are deeply personal and globally linked. Craft A tender, honest and visually magnificent film that resonates with the spirit of resilience and hope.
Baksho Bondi – Shadowbox Solidifies IFFM’s commitment to present stories that are rooted in lived realities while adopting the power of cinematographic narration, making it a perfect start for the 2025 edition.
