Vivek Agnihotri faces FIR over alleged misrepresentation of Freedom Fighter Gopal Mukherjee in new film trailer : Bollywood News
Vivek Agnihotrial Directorial Bengal files Saw a new controversy while Shantanu Mukherjee, grandson of the famous Bengali fighter of Liberty Gopal Mukherjee, filed a police complaint against the filmmaker. The grievance comes in response to the trailer for the next Agnihotri political drama, unveiled on August 16, which coincides with the 80th anniversary of “Great Calcutta Killings”, also known as “Direct Action Day”.

According to Shantanu Mukherjee, the film in an inaccurately portrays his grandfather, calling him “Kashai” (meaning butcher) and “Patha” (which means goat), the terms he describes as deeply disrespectful. “My grandfather was an important figure in the Freedom movement, working alongside eminent leaders, with his ideology aligned with Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. The qualifying as derogatory terms is not only historically inaccurate but also offensive to our family and the community,” said Shantanu in a statement reported by India Teday.
In protest, Shantanu sent a legal opinion to Vivek Agnihotri and filed an official FIR demanding public apology. He expressed his frustration that the filmmakers did not consult the family or verified the historical facts before the release of the trailer. “I think that Vivek Agnihtri should seek more about it. Where did they get these bad information? He did not contact us either. This is why we protest and continue to do so,” he said.
The film, which is the third episode of the “trilogy” of Agnihotri Files after Tashkent files (2019) and Cashmere files (2022), revolved around the great murders of Calcutta of 1946 and the riots of Noakhali. He seeks to describe events as a genocide and underlines how these historical atrocities would have been reduced to silence or ignored in traditional stories. The release of the trailer on the anniversary of the tragedy added emotional weight and intensified public control.
Cinematographic analysts note that Agnihotri’s projects often arouse the debate for their representation of historical events, and the latter controversy underlines the sensitivity surrounding the representations of the fighters of real freedom. Historians and community leaders have echoed the concerns of Shantanu, stressing the importance of responsible narration when they represent figures which have played a central role in the independence movement of India.
The dispute raises critical questions about the responsibility of filmmakers to consult families and historians before dramatizing historical events. It remains to be seen that the controversy will lead to modifications in the film or to formal apology, but the FIR and the legal notice indicate that the debate is just beginning.
