Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri filmmaker, better known for Cashmere filesannounced that the trailer for his next film Bengal files will be launched in Kolkata on August 16, 2025. The choice of date is not a coincidence – it marks the anniversary of the day of direct action, a turning point in the history of independence of India.

On August 16, 1946, the Muslim League called for a demonstration to demand a distinct Muslim homeland, Pakistan. What started as a manifestation in Calcutta quickly died into large -scale community violence between Hindus and Muslims, causing massacres and destruction. Among the personalities of that day, Gopal Mukherjee, who, despite the political authority, mobilized young locals to defend the Hindu communities against the attacks.
Agnihotri explained the importance of the choice of this date, saying: “We chose this day for the launch of the trailer, taking into account what happened on August 16, 1946 in Calcutta. Speaking Bengal filesformerly titled Delhi’s files: Bengal chapterThe film is the third and last part of the Agnihtrotrian file trilogy after Tashkent files (2019) and Cashmere files (2022). The series explores the events of modern Indian history which, according to Agnihotri, has been neglected or distorted.
Bengal files focuses on community violence that rocked individual Bengal in the 1940s. He specifically portrayed direct action and Noakhali riots from 1946, which were described as a Hindu genocide. The film will be released in two parts. The first episode, entitled Bengal files: right to lifeshould be published on September 5, 2025, coinciding with teachers’ day in India.
Agnihotri said in the past that the film was initially called Delhi files To underline his conviction that “the fate of India is written in Delhi and not in Bengal”. However, with the change in development, the project is now committed directly to the turbulent history of Bengal.
With its launch of trailer planned the same day the story took place, Bengal files aims to relaunch conversations around one of the most violent chapters of the independence struggle in India, while establishing parallels with current concerns.
