“Just Because You’re A Big Name…”: Moeen Ali’s Blunt Verdict Amid Rohit Sharma Retirement Calls

India remains a country obsessed with its cricket stars. Very often, this obsession has been emphasized as the reason for the inability of the team to win major titles. There have also been discussions on the places of veterans like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Raviund will Jadeja, etc. Hold in the team even if their performances have not been of the first order on the international scene in recent years. For Moolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Moeen Ali, the players should not keep their place in the team simply because they have a big follow -up of the fans.

Moeen, in a simple conversation with the Indian Expresssaid players can continue to appear in the Indian Premier League (IPL) even when they are not at their best. But on the international scene, it is important to make room so that other players can have a chance.

“The franchisee cricket is one thing, which is like a private company. You can continue to play if the franchisee agrees with that,” Moeen told the newspaper. “And it is a T20. But when you represent a country, whether it is a test or an ODI, self-reflection should be more difficult. If England was a franchise, I would have continued to play because I know that I am capable. But because it is England and that I retire to make the cricket, and there is always a larger group of players to choose.”

When it has been pointed out that it is not an easy call to make certain best Indian players because of their intense fans base (like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli), Moeen said it was important that such decisions come from individuals.

Rohit, in fact, had a sterile race lying with the bat. Even in the current IPL, his statistics brush a disturbing image of a massive decline.

“I really think that you shouldn’t just hold on because you are a big name or you have a massive suite. And it should never be your own personal goals,” he said.

Moeen even said that such a reluctance to withdraw can be described as “selfishness”.

“Do not just hold on to keep it selfishly. Be just a little more realistic and think, is it worth it? Did I have more to give to the team? If the team wants to go in a new direction, I think you should allow it to happen. If you are not playing right now. A little more realistic and honest with yourself,” he said.
