“Was It His Own Decision?”: Ex-England Skipper’s Shocking Take On Rohit Sharma’s Test Retirement

Former England skipper Michael Atherton recently gave a shocking vision of Sudan Rohit Sharma retirement from Test Cricket. The Indian skipper called time for his test career before the next five games against England in June. Putting on social networks, Rohit announced his decision and also said that he would continue to play in ODI for India. Rohit’s decision occurred in the midst of reports that suggest that selectors were not going to appoint it as captain during tests against England.
There has been a significant decrease in the form of Rohit in recent years and the loss of India against Australia in the five-game border-Gavaskar trophy, doing only pressure on its shoulders. Atherton said that although Rohit’s retirement came from nowhere, he had to have the index that his position in the team is not certain.
“Was this retirement completely his own decision, or did he feel that he is about to be pushed or that the ax was going because there was a report, the day before Rohit’s announcement, that the selectors had decided to move on?” Atherton said speaking on Sky Sports.
“It is therefore speculation, we do not know, but in the end, the decision was not a surprise because it is a bad combination for any captain, as you know and as I know if you lose matches and you did not obtain points and India had lost 5 of the last 6 games under the captain of Rohit,” he added.
Rohit decided to suspend his boots after playing 67 tests and scored 4301 points for India. This includes 18 half-century and 12 centuries, an average of 40.58.
“I think people will look at him, and his best format is the ODI. He’s going to be one of the biggest ODI openers, isn’t it? But a funny test career,” said Atherton.
“He had to wait a long time to enter, then almost a career of two halves in the tests, on average just a tick of more than 40 years, with a dozen hundreds of hundreds, it is a successful record, but not quite a stellar record,” he added.
