Nottingham striker Forest Taiwo Awoniyi underwent an “urgent” operation on a serious abdominal injury suffered in the Premier League match last weekend with Leicester, he was announced on Tuesday. The 27-year-old Nigerian international collided with the position in the 88th minute of the 2-2 draw on the city’s field while he was trying to end at the end of a cross of Anthony Elaga when he was subject to a challenge by Facundo Buonanotte des Foxes. “The club can confirm that Taiwo Awoniyi has undergone urgent surgical intervention following an abdominal injury suffered in Sunday’s match against Leicester City,” said a statement.
“Everyone to Nottingham Forest sends their best wishes to Taiwo.
“The club will provide other updates if necessary.”
Awoniyi, who joined Forest in Union Berlin in June 2022, was only on the ground for five minutes after being late to Ibrahim Sangare.
He tried to play on the prolonged follow -up in the field, but the complete extent of his injury was only discovered the medical staff on Monday.
The way in which Awoniyi’s injury was treated during the match was cited by the owner of the forest Evangelos Marinakis as the reason why he storm the ground after the full-time whistle to face the head coach Nuno Espirito Santo.
With the forest to pursue a late objective that would have strengthened their quality offer for the Champions League, Awoniyi returned to action but could not move freely – and Marinakis was unhappy that a substitution was not carried out.
“Everyone – coaches staff, players, supporters and myself – we were frustrated by Taiwo’s injury and poor medical staff assessment on Taiwo’s ability to continue the game,” said Marinakis in an Instagram position published on Sunday.
“It’s natural, it’s a demonstration of the passion that we feel for our club.”
The draw with Leicester, already relegated to the Premier League, took the candidacy of Forest to qualify for the Champions League with its own hands, but assured them of a top-sept finish which will guarantee European football next season.
But if twice European Champions Forest win their last two championship games, including a last -day confrontation with Chelsea, it may not be enough for them to qualify for the Champions League, unless one of Aston Villa, Manchester City or Newcastle also drops points along the way.
