With the veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli leaving the test format, India is now faced with a huge challenge to fill the vacuum left by the two players. The team will obtain a replacement for the stick, but the overall impact that the two players bought together may not be equaled anytime soon. Rohit and Virat have both brought a huge experience with themselves lately, alongside their superb strikers and their tactics on the field who helped the team prosper over the years. The duo is no longer part of the test side, the emphasis now moves to the Indian captain who has not yet been appointed in the format and head coach Gautam Gambir, who will have a huge task of directing a less experienced side.
Saba Karim, former goalkeeper of India and also BCCI selector, believes that Gambir will have a huge role to play in the team of the new look.
“(Gautam) Gambhir becomes the most important person here. He must give confidence to players. The first thing he must do is understand the new captain, the vision he has and the cricket brand he wants the team to play,” said Karim India time.
Devang Gandhi, who is also a former player from India and a former national selector, said Gambir should support players like Rishabh Pant, who recently had a bad race.
“Gambir has clear ideas about how he wants his team to approach a game. But he must be the man who gives players and creates team leaders. I am sure he will support someone like Rishabh Pant, who has struck a difficult spot in Australia, and will give him more confidence in the next difficult tour of England,” said Gandhi.
India is ready to visit England for a series of five game tests from June 20. It will be the start of the campaign for the Indian team in the 2025-27 world championship cycle. The series team should be announced on May 23. Some new faces could make a reduction in the team while India aims to put a better show this time, unlike the last cycle in which they missed a place in the final.
