Fallen Hamburg Return To Bundesliga After Seven-Year Absence

The Hamburg False German giants won an automatic promotion at the Bundesliga after an absence of seven years with a 6-1 house at home in Ulm Modeste on Saturday. While the full -time whistle was going, fans of the Volksparkstadion of 57,000 people stormed the field to celebrate with the players. One of the only three German clubs to win the European Cup, the precursor of the Champions League, and a league champion six times, Hamburg was relegated for the first time in their history in 2018. Entering the game requiring a victory to guarantee the promotion, Hamburg was late after seven minutes when Tom Gaal of ULM marked, but struck three minutes later.
After Ulm missed a 36th minute penalty, Hamburg calmed his nerves with two fast goals before half-time via Ransford-Yeboah Koenigsdoerffer and Davie Selke.
ULM conceded a own goal from Philipp Strompf at the start of the second half before Koenigsdoerffer adds another. Daniel Elfadli marked four minutes to play to put Hamburg on the right track for the elite after 2,555 days.
Despite resources that eclipse many high -level teams, Hamburg could not return to the upper division, finishing fourth three times and third twice.
The return was controlled by the Recruit Coach Merlin Polzin, 34, who was born in the city and grew up as a fan of Hamburg.
“We have suffered really difficult setbacks in the team, but we have always rebounded,” said Polzin before the match.
“It gives me a very, very, very good feeling that we can make this evening a very special evening.”
The victory took Hamburg to a point away from Cologne at the top of the Bundesliga 2 table. Cologne, relegated last season, needs at least one point of their last match next week to join Hamburg in the elite.
Also on Saturday, Holstein Kiel and Bochum were confirmed relegated from the upper division.
The defeat of ULM seals its relegation to the third level alongside Jahn Regensburg.
