After the pensions of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma of Test Cricket, the head coach of India Guatam Gambir would have demanded the full authority of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for the daily operations of the team. Since his appointment as a head coach, Gambir has been categorical to end the culture of superstar within the team. And it seems that he may have played a big hand to force Rohit and Kohli from the configured test, with an eye on the future.
The sudden announcement of Rohit and Kohli had days before the Indian team selection for the next series of tests in England. The team is guaranteed to have a new captain, with Shubman Gill and Jasprit Bumrah leading the race to wear the blazer at Tock when the first test begins in Leeds on June 20.
According to a report in Dainik BhaskarGambir is likely to call the shots, with regard to the selection of teams, the development of policies and other decisions related to the team, because there is no one left to challenge his calls. This will mark the first instance of an Indian head coach with more power than the captain.
“In order to stop a rehearsal of the defeat of the home series against New Zealand and the debacle in Australia, Gambir asked for the board of directors for complete autonomy,” said the report.
The report added that Gambir would like to have a captain in Gill, who can be his partner because he is still young. The only player who can challenge the current Gambir team is the other favorite in the race for Captain – Bumrah.
Bumrah was the designated deputy for Rohit in Test Cricket, which makes him an ideally an automatic captain’s choice. He was even a replacement captain in Perth and led the team when Rohit chose the final test in Sydney. However, his injury file could be the reason why Gill obtained the green light.
If this happens, it is sure to say that it is indeed the beginning of the era “Gautam Gambir”. However, Gambir will only have this authority in test cricket, because Rohit and Kohli are preparing to play the ODI 2027 World Cup.
