“Very Upset That He Will Not Get Captaincy”: R Ashwin’s Bombshell About Jasprit Bumrah Ahead Of India Team Selection

While the debate and discussion on the choice of the next India test captain continues, the former legendary India spinner, R Ashwin, explained his feelings on this subject. Ashwin, who retired from all forms of cricket at the end of 2024, spoke of the race for the captain, who opened after Rohit Sharma’s retirement from Test Cricket. According to sources, the 25-year-old striker, Shubman Gill, is expected to be appointed captain for the next Indian tour in England, in front of the experienced stimulator Jasprit Bumrah, vice-captain at the time of Rohit as captain.
According to reports, Gill should be chosen before Bumrah because of the age of age for his part and the concerns of the latter’s physical condition.
However, Ashwin, who was a teammate of the two players for many games, expressed his disappointment in the face of the fact that Bumrah did not receive the captain.
“I am very, very upset and disappointed that Jasprit Bumrah does not obtain the captain (from India). I think he is a national treasure,” said Ashwin, speaking of his Channel YouTube ‘Ash Ki Baat’.
“I was so happy when he became the captain, but I think it’s out the window,” said Ashwin.
Bumrah previously captured India in three test games, winning one and losing two. In particular, Bumrah led India to their only victory in the Border-Gavaskar 2024-25 trophy series against Australia in Australia.
Ashwin has raised a point that the captain should always be someone who is an automatic entry into the game game, and threw another name into the hat.
“There are obvious choices, but I also want to throw another name – Ravira will Jadeja,” said Ashwin.
“There are always news on whom will be appointed captain or vice-captain, but their name should first be in the XI of the team. It must be an automatic selection,” said Ashwin.
Shubman Gill was appointed Indian vice-captain in white ball formats in a series in 2024, reporting that he was in the selectors’ plans for a long-term captain’s position. However, Gill never had a leadership role in test cricket. Even when Bumrah was not able to take the ground and Rohit was not in the Xi game in the final test of India against Australia, it was Virat Kohli, and not Gill, who took over as a replacement captain.
However, while Bumrah was appointed test cricket player for the year of the ICC in 2024, Gill does not yet boast big numbers in the format, with an average of 35 after 32 tests.
