IOC Board Approves Boxing For Inclusion In 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games

Boxing should be included in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games program after the International Committee Board of Directors (IOC) approved its inclusion before its 144th session from Tuesday. The decision follows the granting of the CIC to provisional recognition to world boxing last month, effectively highlighting the International Boxing Association (IBA) and the transfer of authority to the new director body. The session of March 18 to 21, which will also eliminate a new president to succeed Thomas Bach, should ratify the decision of the board of directors of the inclusion of boxing in the alignment of the 2028 games of the.
“After the provisional recognition of world boxing in February, we were able to make this decision so that … This recommendation must of course go to the session,” said Bach after the executive council meeting.
“I am very confident that the session will approve of it so that all the boxers in the world then have a certainty that they can participate in the Olympic Games 2028 if their national federation is recognized by world boxing.” The IOC supervised boxing competitions during the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 matches after decomposing IBA in 2023 due to an extended dispute on governance issues and concerns about the integrity of the fighting.
Welcome to the decision, the president of world boxing, Boris van der Vorst, said: “This is a very important and important decision for Olympic boxing and brings the sport of the restoration of the Olympic program.
“I have no doubt that this will be very positively received by all those linked to boxing, at all levels of the world, which include the critical importance for the future of boxing sport which continues to remain a part of the Olympic movement.
“On behalf of everyone in World Boxing, I would like to thank the IOC EB for the confidence they have placed in our organization and we hope for a positive result when the IOC session will meet this week.” Boxing was not included in the initial sports program of 2028 Games approved by the IOC session in February 2022 due to the current concerns concerning the International Federation of the time, the International Boxing Association (IBA).
After withdrawing the recognition of IBA on June 22, 2023, the inclusion of boxing on the Games 2028 sports program remained pending.
The Paris 2024 boxing competition and its qualification tournaments were organized under the authority of the Paris 2024 boxing unit, an ad hoc working group created by the EB CIO. This decision was made to protect the participation of athletes in the Olympic Games and deliver a clear, fair and transparent path for boxers to qualify, ensuring fair and fair competition.
Last year, the IOC clearly indicated that national boxing federations were to reach a consensus around a new international federation for boxing to be included in the sports program of the 2028 Olympic Games.
Following an evaluation of the various criteria concerning governance and sports integrity, the IOC board of directors on February 26 decided to provisionally recognize world boxing, which is currently made up of 84 national federations on five continents.
