Out Of Playoffs Race, KKR Question BCCI Over New Rule: “Ended Chances…”

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) criticized the decision of the Indian Premier League (IPL) to authorize 120 minutes of additional time for the league matches affected by the rain, the calling “ad hoc” and poorly timed. They believe that this new rule could have helped them to stay in the race for the playoffs if it had been introduced earlier, according to Espncricinfo. The IPL board of directors recently updated the rules to grant two overtime for the last nine championship games, hoping to provide full matches of 20 on site despite the expected rains of the monsoon. Previously, only one additional time was authorized for championship matches and two hours for the playoffs.

In an email sent to the ten teams, IPL COO head, Hemang Amin, explained that the change had been made due to the growing threat of rain. However, KKR CEO, Venky Mysore, replied, wondering why this rule was not implemented from the moment the tournament has resumed.

“Although these mid-season modifications can be necessary in the circumstances, we should have expected more coherence in the way these modifications are applied,” Mysore in email said, according to Espncricinfo.

He underlined the KKR match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on May 17, the first after the tournament break due to the Indian-Pakistani tensions as an example. This match, held in Bengaluru, was swept away by the rain, and no game was possible. The match was finally canceled at 10:26 p.m., just before the original cut -off time at 10:56 p.m., and the two teams had to settle for one point each.

Mystore argued that with the new two -hour stamp, there may have been enough time to contain at least one game of five on the spot, which could have maintained the hopes in KKR qualifying series. He noted that the weather forecast had already warned against the rain that day, so the need for flexibility was clear.

“When the IPL restarted, it was clear that the first match of May 17 KKR vs RCB was at high risk of being interrupted due to the rain [Bengaluru]. The forecasts were there so that everyone could see. Not only was the game washed, but the additional 120 minutes, now applied, may have given a chance at least 5 on a side game, “said Mysore.

“Washing has ended KKR’s chances of making the playoffs. Such an ad hoc decision and inconsistencies to apply to them are not appropriate for a tournament of this position. I am sure that you also understand why we feel injured,” he added.
