Carlos Alcaraz Stunned By Jack Draper In Indian Wells Semi-Final

Jack Draper put an end to the offer of Carlos Alcaraz for a rare Wells ATP Masters with three peat on Saturday, overthrowing the Spanish to reserve a title confrontation with Holger Rune. The British draper, ranked 14th in the world, held his nerve to beat Alcaraz 6-1, 0-6, 6-4 and reach the first Masters 1000 final in his career. The Rune of Denmark, ranked 13th, triumphed 7-5, 6-4 on the world number six Daniil Medvedev-which had been a finalist in Alcaraz each of the last two years. “He hurts,” admitted Alcaraz, who was trying to join Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic as the only men to win three consecutive titles in the California desert.
“I don’t want to lose a match, but I think it was even more special for me. It was difficult today, a lot of nerves in the match.”
Draper ended the sequence of 16 consecutive victories of Alcaraz in the California desert, jumping from the door and ending the first set in 23 minutes when Alcaraz failed to seize the service of the left -hander.
The second set was a mirror image of the first while Alcaraz found his range and after pushing a break point with an ACE of 137 MPH in the opening game broke three times to level the match.
“It was a strange match in all honesty,” said Draper. “Carlos came out a bit flat, I felt that. I had a chance in the first match of the second, and he came with an ace …
“What happened to him happened, I became tight, I had weak energy. I got lost there for 25 minutes, but in the third, I was really proud of my competitiveness, my attitude and I managed to cross the line.”
Draper, who lost a set to love for the first time in his career, broke Alcaraz for an advance of 2-1 in the third in a match that presented a long video review which showed that the Briton had indeed managed to collect a winner of a drop of Alcaraz drop without double rebound.
During the examination, referee Mohamed Lahyani first asked that the point be replayed, but then attributed it to Draper, judging his call “not up” in the rally had not bothered Alcaraz.
“While waiting for the balls of the ball, they did not disturb me at all,” said Alcaraz. “All I can say is that Jack came, he played much better than me. This point did not affect my game at all.”
With the momentum on its side, Draper broke out again for 5-2 advance – Alcaraz having not put four match points.
Draper showed a few nerves while he was used for the match at 5-2 and was broken, abuse stabilized to seal the victory on his second opportunity.
Make things difficult
Rune has executed a matching match plan to perfection against Medvedev to take a sequence of seven consecutive defeats in the semi-finals.
“It was to really play my game, come forward, take the balloon,” said Rune about his strategy against a player known for his defense.
“If you hit him hard, he likes the rhythm and he responds well to the defense and a strong back.
“So I tried to make it difficult. I tried to mix it, making each blow that he must play boring for him. Slices, slow slices, a little mixing the tempo, striking hard on some, in a loop.”
After a first exchange of breaks in the opening set, Rune managed to grind a key socket for 4-4, which saved a break in a match which was degenerated six times and lasted almost 11 minutes.
He broke up for an advance of 6-5 and pocketed the whole when his rolling setback attracted another MEDVEDEV error, then took an early break in the second set to victory.
