A cinema in Ontario, Canada, has disconnected several projections of Indian films after being targeted in two violent attacks in a week. The film.ca cinemas, located in Oakville, were struck for the first time by an attempted criminal fire, then by shooting, encouraging the authorities and the theater itself to take precautionary measures. The theater had shown films from South Asia, including Rishab Shetty Kantara: a legend chapter 1 and Pawan Kalyan They call it og. After the incidents, the two films have now been removed from the programming.

What happened?
The first attack took place on September 25, when two suspects carrying red jerrycans tried to set fire to the entrance to the theater around 5:20 am. While the fire was contained outside and only caused moderate damage, safety images have revealed a sequence of frightening events: a gray SUV surrounding the premises several times, followed by two masked individuals pouring liquid at the gates before lighting it.
A week later, on October 2, a second attack occurred. This time, a single suspect shot several bullets through the theater entry doors at 1:50 am. Police described the suspects but did not confirm their identity or their reasons.
Police investigation
The authorities believe that the incidents have been deliberate and called on the public to obtain information. Although some sources have suggested a possible link with Khalistani extremist groups, Halton’s police did not confirm this angle. Oakville had previously witnessed Khalistani threats against a local temple, but no official link was established in this case.
The theater responds
Jeff Knoll, CEO of film.ca Cinemas, initially promised not to be intimidated. In a video message, he said, “We are going to play what we want to play when we want to play it.” However, a declaration of monitoring the theater recognized the severity of the situation.

“The evidence seems to show that the participation in the Southern Asian films exhibition led to these incidents in our theater and to other theaters across the GTA,” said the press release. The theater has also added: “Although we do not want to bow to threats, the situation has intensified to the point where we must take all the precautions to protect our community.”
Consequently, Film.Ca Cinemas has temporarily stopped to project Indian films, and its update range no longer presents titles from South Asia.
Training
Fear has spread beyond Oakville. Another theater, York Cinemas, also announced that it would not make Indian films “until further notice”. In a public statement, the theater quoted the security of employees and customers as well as the decision and assured that reimbursements would be issued for ticket reservations in advance.
