While most reports said Nayar was kidnapped after India’s bad show on the Australian tour, the PTI news agency offered an interesting detail.
A PTI report said Nayar’s dismissal was on the cards after Sitanshu Kotak had been added to the Indian team support staff as an additional striker.
“… just after the tour of Australia, there was a review meeting led by the BCCI. The senior officials of the board of directors, including the secretary Devajit Saikia and the vice-president Rajeev Shukla, were present with important members associated with the Indian team, and the national selectors,” said a BCCI source cited by the press agency.
“On the sidelines of the meeting, a powerful member of the support staff expressed their apprehensions about the presence of Nayar and said that the fact that he was in the locker room turns out to be counterproductive.
“Although the BCCI did not act immediately but they brought Kotak, the former Sarashtra race accumulator. It was a way of lowering Nayar during the champions trophy,” added the source.
