India Beat Hong Kong In Billie Jean King Cup Asia-Ocenia Group 1




The Indian team continued its winning race in group 1 of the Billie Jean King Cup Asia-Oceania, offering a solid performance to win a 2-1 victory against Hong Kong, in China, here on Thursday evening. The tournament, organized by MSLTA in association with ITF, AITA and PMDTA takes place at the Mahalunge Balewadi Tennis complex in Pune. India experienced the ideal start on the third day, gracked Vaidehi Chaudhari, the splendid performance against Ho Ching Wu, in the first match of the Indian tournament.

The youngster, from Ahmedabad, fought tooth and nails in a closely disputed first set, winning the break in equality 10-8. She wasted no time to win in the second set, finally obtaining a 7-6 victory (10-8), 6-1 in 2 hours and 3 minutes, to give India an advance of 1-0 in the draw against Hong Kong, in China.

In the second single match between the two countries, Shrivalli Bamidipaty continued his fabulous race in the tournament, retaining a perfect record after three games. The young Indian star had to deeply dig against Hong Yi Cody Wong during a meeting of three sets which lasted 2 hours and 27 minutes. Shrivalli put the first set in an equal break, winning 8-6, before his opponent retaliated. However, the Indian had the last laugh with 8 AS, guaranteeing a crucial victory 7-6, 2-6, 6-3 to give India an unassailable 2-0 advance.

During their last match of the day, the Indian duo of Ankita Raina and Prarthana Thombare failed to fight hard against Eudice Chong and Hong Yi Cody Wong. The experienced Indian pair obtained the first set in an equality break, before the duo of Hong Kong, in China, retaliated in the second set. And from there, in Hong Kong, in China, had the best of exchanges, winning the final set and the competition at 7-6, 3-6, 11-13.

Sponsored by Suhana, the Indian team will face the Chinese taipei in their third match of the Billie Jean King Cup on Friday April 11.

The tournament is propelled by sports Authority of India (SAI) and the Ministry of Sports and Youth Welfare (Maharashtra).
