The world number three Carlos Alcaraz withdrew from the Madrid Open on Thursday with a thigh injury, in one blow for its preparations for the defense of the French title. The Spaniard, a quadruple winner of the Grand Chelem, supported the problem during his final defeat of Barcelona Open last Sunday by Holger Rune. “I did everything in my hands, but that hasn’t improved much in the (last) days,” said Alcaraz at a press conference. “Things did not work because I wanted to be able to play here, and we decided not to take risks.
“If I played, I was going to be spoiled longer than expected … difficult decisions had to be made, and I think we did the right one.”
Alcaraz hoped to raise the trophy in Madrid for the third time after his victories in 2022 and 2023.
The 21 -year -old had not trained all week after his arrival in the Spanish capital on Monday.
The Spaniard did not exclude participating in the Italian Open and said he was sure that he would open the French.
“I think I will certainly be in Roland Garros and I will do everything possible to be in Rome,” said Alcaraz.
“Monday, I will have another test to see how it has evolved, and from there, we will take time and assess how the next few weeks will be and how my body is.”
The main draw of the French Open begins on May 25.
