According to recent media reports, the powerful feature film inspired by the Shah Bano affair and other similar cases is currently in preparation and recently filming for the same has been wrapped in Lucknow. The project is about to be the next big theatrical version of Yami Gautam after Article 370 And should immerse themselves in personal and political complexities behind the legal battles which become national flash points.

In 1978, Shah Bano, 62, mother of five, approached the Supreme Court under article 125 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CRPC), requesting the interview after being divorced unilaterally via Talaq triple by her husband, Mohd. Ahmad Khan – A lawyer who invoked Muslim personal law to refuse his continuous support. After an prolonged legal battle, the Supreme Court ruled in its favor in 1985, declaring that article 125 applied to all citizens, whatever the religion, thus guaranteeing the right of a woman divorced to the interview – a historical victory for the justice between the sexes and constitutional equality.

However, the verdict sparked a fierce reaction from conservative Muslim groups. In response, the government led by Rajiv Gandhi promulgated the 1986 law on Muslim women (protection of divorce rights), effectively exceeding the decision of the Court and triggering a debate on a national level on voting banks, minority rights and the uniform civil code (UCC) – a debate that continues today.

The case remains a frequent point of reference in contemporary political discourse. Managers such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Minister of the Interior Amit Shah often cite Shah Bano as a pivotal moment in the legal history of India – and in the continuous push of the UCC and the reform within personal laws.
