BCCI Hints At Expanded 94-Match IPL. Reports Makes Big Claim On New Teams

The president of IPL, Arun Dhumal, said that the BCCI is seriously considering extending the League to a format of 94 home games from the next media rights cycle, which fell in 2028. The IPL has currently the format of 74 games since Gujarat Titans (GT) and the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) entered the Fray in 2022. discussed internally in BCCI.

“Ideally, we would like a larger window, or perhaps last from 74 to 84 or 94 at a given time … so that each team can play against each team at home and outside, for that, you need 94 games,” said Dhumal on Monday.

There was talk about the growth of IPL to 84 games for the current season, but it was delayed due to tight planning. “Given the window and the type of commitments we have with regard to bilateral cricket and ICC events, this may not be possible in the short term. But given the landscape, how it changes and evolves over the years, perhaps at some point, we would have and take this option.”

“There was so much cricket: we came back from Australia from a series of tests, we had this champions trophy, and in addition to that, we have this IPL. This is why it was decided that it did not make sense to go from 74 to 84 (in 2025), but each time we think that the time is appropriate, we will take this call,” added Dhumal.

Dhumal also revealed that it was not planned to introduce new IPL teams. “Ten is a good number for the moment. Paramount is the interest in the tournament and the quality of the cricket that we play. I see no scope in the short term. In the future, with the way all this landscape evolves, we will make a call accordingly.”

Dhumal signed by declaring that it would be fantastic for the IPL to have a first champion this year. Delhi Capitals (DC), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have not yet won a IPL trophy and are in great assertion to enter the eliminatory series.

“Each year, it has grown up. We are very happy to see how fans loved this tournament, and the broadcasting numbers and stadium numbers are all phenomenal. We hope to continue to continue, the 18th edition. We are very sure that it will continue to grow in the way in which we have seen in the last 17 years.”

“Certainly, I would like someone who has never won the tournament raises the trophy this year. DC has done exceptionally well in recent years, but they have not won. The kings of Punjab have reached a final, and RCB, out of time, behaved well.”

“If some of these teams compete in the final, we will know with certainty that we will have a new winner, then I will be very happy for the tournament.”
