Sampdoria fell to the third level of Italian football for the first time on Tuesday after a virgin draw with Juve Stagia has recorded them at the lowest point in their history. Italian champions in 1991 and finalists of the European Cup the following year, Samp finished 18th and in the direct relegation zone of Serie C after having collected 41 points from 38 games. Tuesday’s draw allowed Salernitana to jump Samp in one of the two relegation barrage places with a 2-0 victory in Cittadella.

SAMP, which posted a loss of 40.7 million euros in their 2024 accounts, has spent the last seasons to face serious financial problems and has spent this season to fall backwards after doing the Serie B qualifiers last season.

Samp was about to go bankrupt after relegation to Serie B in 2023, but was saved this summer by the current president Matteo Manfredi and the former owner of Leeds United, Andrea Radrizzani, who has since left the club.

The club’s majority shareholder is the Singaporean businessman Joseph Tey.

The icons of the Alberico Evani club and Attilio Lombardo were hired as coaches in April to try to save Samp of decline after a significant market activity last summer and in January.

Evani is the fourth head coach of Samp’s season after Andrea Pirlo, Andrea Sottil and Leonardo Semplice.
