Defender Roma Mats Hummels, who won the 2014 World Cup with Germany, is expected to retire at the end of the season, he announced on social media on Friday. In an emotional video published on Instagram, the 36 -year -old man referenced “a moment that no footballer can avoid”, adding “after more than 18 years of everything that football gave me, I end my career this summer”. Hummels came by the juniors of Bayern Munich and made his debut for the club at the age of 18, before moving to Borussia Dortmund where he became an essential element of the double winner of the title of Jurgen Klopp.
By playing alongside his central colleague Jerome Boateng, Hummels played every minute from the 2014 World Cup final, where Germany beat Argentina 1-0 in Brazil Maracana Stadium to raise the title for the fourth time.
He then returned to Bayern, where he won three other league titles. The return of Hummels to Bayern, seen critically by some Dortmund fans, was looking for a title of the Champions League, but the defender never managed to break into the best competition in Europe.
Hummels returned to Dortmund in 2019, a year before Bayern defeated Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final to raise its sixth crown.
The defender played twice in the Champions League final in 2013 and 2024, the twice in a losing effort with Dortmund and the twice in Wembley.
Player in Germany of 78 times, Hummels played 508 games for Dortmund and 118 others for Bayern. He moved to Serie A Side Roma in 2024 and retired after playing a season for the club.
German coach Julian Nagelsmann congratulated Hummels as “a reference at the international level and a model for a generation of defenders”.
