This ban on Pakistani content arrives in a context of increased tensions between India and Pakistan, in particular following the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, in Jammu-et-Cachemire, on April 22, 2025. This tragic incident led to the loss of 26 years, including tourists and a local resident, and was largely condemned as a brutal act of terrorism pretended.
In the aftermath of Pahalgam’s attack, there was a palpable increase in national feeling, many calling for strong measures against Pakistan and its support perceived to terrorist activities. This ban on the content of the Pakistani media on OTT platforms can be considered as part of a broader response from the Indian government.
One day earlier, the All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) had published a statement criticizing Pakistani actors Mahira Khan and Fawad Khan for having made “anti-indie” comments. In his press release, Aicwa alleged that Mahira Khan called India’s military response as “seriously cowardly” and accused Fawad Khan of “supporting division accounts” instead of condemning terrorism. AICWA said that it maintains a “strict and complete prohibition” on Pakistani artists, filmmakers and financiers to work in India.
