Guru Dutt biopic in early talks; Vicky Kaushal considered to play the icon : Bollywood News

While Indian cinema is approaching the 100th birthday of Guru Dutt, plans are underway to commemorate his life and his long -scale heritage. Ultra Media & Entertainment Group, which holds the rights of his filmography, revealed a tribute to several layers. It will also include the possibility of a biopic and web adaptation of his most famous works.

Rajat Agrawal, COO and director of Ultra Media, confirmed that the first discussions had started for a complete biopic on the legendary filmmaker. A midday report quoted Rajat saying: “Biopics are always difficult because they must imitate the greatness and the achievements of an individual. We will be happy to collaborate with producers and a modern director who is a fanatic of Guru Dutt “, while noting that the company is in talks with two leaders of the leading.
When asked who could portray the complexity and sensitivity of Guru Dutt on the screen, AGRAWAL underlined Vicky Kaushal as a possible candidate. “Naming an actor would be difficult because there is a plethora of talents, but I think that Vicky Kaushal can bring the emotional depth of Guru Duttji,” he added.
In addition to the biopic, Ultra explores the idea of adapting some of the acclaimed films of Dutt in the web series. Although no official announcement has been made, AGRAWAL revealed that two well -known directors have shown interest in reinventing the filmmaker’s stories for digital space.
Restored versions unveiled in Cannes 2025
Earlier this month, Ultra Media presented restored versions of the cinematographic monuments of Guru Dutt – Pyaasa (1957), KAAGAZ KE PHOOL (1959), Charthvin Ka Chand (1960), and Sahib bibi aur ghulam (1962) – At the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, receiving a warm response from the world public. This decision is part of a broader initiative to reintroduce DUTT’s works to contemporary viewers while preserving their original charm.
Agrawal stressed that the restorations remain faithful to the aesthetics in original black and white, although some songs can be colored as an experience. “All of his films were restored in the original black and white version to give the same nostalgic feeling. However, we plan to color a few songs to see the public’s reaction.”
Tribute nationally before the birthday of birth
In the perspective of Guru Dutt’s centenary of birth on July 9, a one -week celebration is planned through India. The initiative will include theatrical reissues of restored classics, organized exhibitions and group discussions featuring the main voices of the Indian film industry. The objective is to review the genius of a filmmaker who has captured human emotion with a rare sensitivity and a cinematographic innovation.
