The film is based on the case of Kanhaiyalal murder of 2022, an incident that shocked the nation. The problems started shortly after the teaser’s release, when Kanhaiyalal’s family raised objections and put a petition before the high court of Rajasthan. They argued that the film provoked them at “mental agony” and could “spoil social harmony”. This led to a temporary stay at the exit.
In July 2025, the Supreme Court canceled the suspension, judging what to make a film on a real incident is not illegal, as long as it does not violate the constitutional limits. The Court’s decision paved the way for the film’s certification by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and published for the public.
Originally entitled Gyanvapi files: History of the murder of a tailorThe film was initially scheduled for July 11, 2025. However, its beginnings were postponed due to the legal proceedings. The Supreme Court finally led its release on August 8.
Produced by Amit Jani and with Vijay Raaz in the main role, Udaipur files brings to the projection of a dramatized representation of one of the most disturbing crimes in recent years. The project drew attention not only for its sensitive subject, but also for the preceding legal reaffirming the law of filmmakers to represent real incidents in constitutional borders.
