The filmmaker Karan Johar won a legal victory at the High Court of Delhi after the bench ruled in his favor in a trial concerning the abuse of his name, his image and his voice on social networks without his consent.

The court said that Johar’s personality rights should be protected and have led major technological companies, including Google, Meta and X, to hand over the IT newspaper files as well as the basic information of subscribers linked to alleged violations. In addition, the Redbubble electronic commercial platform has been ordered to delete the content considered to be reprehensible. A detailed prescription is expected at the next hearing.
Judge Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora said that “defendants 14, 15 and 16, which include social networking companies Google, Meta and X, will provide IT newspaper records in addition to information on the information of basic subscribers.” The court also summoned other online platforms such as Giphy and Pinterest, listed as defendants 2-5 and 7-10 in the pursuit, to comply in the procedure.
Regarding the request for provisional alleviation, the judge said: “In AI (request for provisional alleviation), I will transmit a detailed order. An injunction to be granted. ” Redbubble’s lawyer confirmed that he would start to withdraw the counterfeit equipment in a week. Earlier, the court had asked Johar to enumerate the URL or the publications which he considered as offensive or misleading, especially if the content was defamatory, obscene or otherwise reprehensible, precisely.
This decision follows precedents in favor of other celebrities such as Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan, where the High Court recently judged that the unauthorized use of the image, voice or name of its intimacy, in particular via technologies such as AI, is equivalent to an invasion of private life.
