Lovlina Borgohain Considers Move To 70kg After IOC Scraps Her 75kg Weight Class From Olympics

The medalist of the Tokyo Olympic Games, Lovlina Borgohain, could go to the 70 kg category after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) canceled its current 75 kg weight category for the Los Angeles 2028 Games, forcing it to choose a new division. The IOC announced on Wednesday the program of the event and the athlete quotas for the Los Angeles Games. With the rejig, Borgohain will have to move to 70 kg or in bulk up to 80 kg. “This is any new information for me. It is quite shocking,” said Borgohain, who was caught up in development, in PTI of Guwahati.
“I think I should go down to 70 kg because it will be difficult for me to go up to 80 kg,” she said.
His personal trainer Punamika Bora was just as surprised by development, but said that the final appeal would only be made after a series of fitness and medical assessments.
“Really surprised by this news. It is too early to engage in anything. She can fight in the two weight categories because she is also the size of 80 kg,” said Bora.
“But we will carry out some tests to check what is best for the body, reduction in weight or swelling. After that, we will take a call.” Currently, Borgohain’s natural weight is 74 kg and Bora has stressed that losing too much weight could lead to a reduction in resistance.
“Right now, its natural weight is 74 kg and too much cut could allow it to lose strength. We will therefore see what gives it more advantages,” said Bora, who has traveled with Borgohain for the Paris Olympic Games.
Boxing, which was confirmed for inclusion at the 2028 Olympic Games last month, will include an equal number of events for men and women (seven each) for the first time.
An additional women’s weight category has been added from the Paris Games.
The new female categories of the Olympic Games include 51 kg (fly weight), 54 kg (Bantam weight), 57 kg (featherweight), 60 kg (light), 65 kg (Welter weight), 70 kg (light average weight) and 80 kg (heavy goods vehicle).
The 75 kg ax is as surprising as global boxing, which has been temporarily recognized by the IOC as the new sports director of sport in February, currently has the weight category of 75 kg on its list instead of 80 kg.
This is not the first time that Borgohain had to change categories due to a rejig. Before the Paris Games, she left her, then favored the 69 kg division at 75 kg after the first was chopped with the Olympic program.
Despite the change, Borgohain has adapted impressively. She won gold at the 2022 Asian championships, won the title of the 2023 World Championship and took the money at the Hangzhou Asian Games.
If she opts for 70 kg, this would mark a return to a weight category near the 69 kg category in which she won bronze at the Tokyo Games.
The Assam boxer also won two bronze medals each at the world championships and the Asian championships while competit of the Welter weight, where his size gave him a separate advantage.
The double boxer of the world Nikhat Zareen, which participated in 50 kg during the previous Olympic cycle, should increase to 51 kg.
The new male weight categories for the Olympic Games will start from 55 kg (rooster weight), 60 kg (light weight), 65 kg (Welter weight), 70 kg (light average weight), 80 kg (light heavy goods vehicle), 90 kg (heavy goods vehicle) and 90 kg (super heavyweight).
The division (50 kg) of the fly weights has been rebuilt.
