“The Way He captained…”: Kapil Dev On Rohit Sharma’s Test Retirement

Very little in India may claim to have played cricket and captain the national team like Rohit Sharma, said the legendary versatile Kapil Dev after the maestro in the stick announced his retirement from the test cricket with immediate effect. The 38-year-old man was the most prolific test striker in India in the second half of his career, marking 4301 points in 67 tests with 12 hundred and 18 half-century at an average of 40.57. “He has done a wonderful job, played a good cricket. Over time, the way he led himself, the way he capitalized and especially the way he played his cricket-because in India, very few played cricket like this,” said Kapil in an exclusive interview with PTI videos.
“I congratulate him on a wonderful career.” Having already retired from International T20 after the World Cup last year, Rohit will now be seen only the management of India in ODI format.
“Hello everyone, I would just like to share that I retire from the test cricket. It was an absolute honor to represent my country in the whites,” he posted on Instagram with a photo of his test cap after PTI’s feeling on Wednesday.
Rohit’s retirement from the traditional format means that India will have to appoint a new full -time captain almost immediately after the end of the 2025 IPL, with the series in five Tests from India in England which should start on June 20 in Headingley.
Asked who is the best candidate to lead the Indian test team in the coming years, Kapil simply said that it was the work of the selectors to choose the captain.
“Some of the things and responsibilities should be left to the selectors. They will find the new captain. We should not give much our opinion because the selectors have their work, and when it is from Team India, they will do their jobs with responsibility.
“Whoever they bring as captain will be the best for Team India. Although taking the place of Rohit is difficult, someone must assume this responsibility,” he added.
Rohit also informed that he will continue to play the ODI format, the next World Cup of which should take place in 2027.
Kapil said it was good that Rohit is still hungry to play game 50.
“Everyone wants to play cricket – Sachin, Gavaskar, everyone wanted to play. But once again, it also depends on the selectors. It’s good that he wants to play. Everyone wants to play the World Cup and win, but some things should be left to the selectors.” Speaking of the emergence of young talents in IPL 2025, Kapil stressed the need to remain patient and protect them.
“We have to give these young people a little time. Talent is there, but if they will do things largely … I think they need a little more time. These young people should be protected.
“We have to see and identify who can be the next Sachin Tendulkar, the next Sunil Gavaskar, or the next Rohit Sharma. The future will say,” he concluded.
