MI Coach Mahela Jayawardene Gives Clear-Cut Reason For Defeats, Says “Have Quality But…”

Head coach Mahela Jayawardene said that Mumbai Indians had the quality of beating any team on Sunday but had to “put away” in all areas and be ruthless and clinical, before their IPL confrontation against the Bengaluru Royals here. The perennial Indians of IPL, the Mumbai Indians are currently eighth in the table of points after three defeats in four games, but hope to overthrow their fortune with the return of Jasprit Bumrah to the side. Jayawardene said the Mumbai Indians are not heavy, but the experience they have in their range of strikers differentiates them from others.
“The luxury we have in our range is that we have the quality in Surya, Tilak and Hardik in the average order. Perhaps the experience we have is something that some of the other teams may not have,” he told the media before the MI training.
“We are not so heavy. We have a lot of players capped in the first order as well as in the programming, so I do not see the game, for us at least, going this way.” “Yes, there are games (in which) your upper order will click, like the way we played against Calcutta (KKR) here on the counter, then there are cases where we have (summer) launched the challenge we lost,” he added.
Jayawardene said Mi needed to be more ruthless and clinical in their approach, as they showed Kolkata Knight Riders last week.
“We have the quality to beat a team of many situations. We just need to be a little more ruthless, clinical in some cases. I do not put it in the stick, because even in bowling alley, we could have controlled things a little better,” he said.
“We would not have given these 20 additional points on the ground. These are areas that we are trying to store and try to be much more consistent all around.” “It’s a difficult tournament, we all know it. The margins are very small. We just have to try to be a little more ruthless,” he said.
Jayawardene has not read much in the “taboo” mode of the dismissal of Tilak Varma – withdrew against Lucknow super -managers – and expressed his confidence that the striker will continue to deliver for mid.
“I know that it is created by everyone. But modern times are much more tactical. We continue to change the lines of strikers to correspond to certain bowlingal programs and to all this. I do not see how different it is,” he said.
“As a drummer, I had times when you are going to beat and then you have trouble spending and they are good at you, it’s a combination of that.” “He beat very well for us in the last three games, (in) difficult situations as we lost the counters early and we built these partnerships and led us to situations that we need. This is what his role with this experience, what he brings to the game and I always appreciate this.” Jayawardene said it was his decision to withdraw Tilak and send Mitchell Santner to the end of their pursuit against the LSG.
“He was trying and he couldn’t go. I just felt that it was my decision to throw someone else to get these two tubes and Mitch did it in the last games. He was in decent form.
“I needed (someone to find) two strokes to reach these 15 points or 20 points we needed in the latter, so it was just a shift.
“It has nothing to do with Tilak. I’m sure he’s going to enter here tomorrow and he will win the match for us, who is Tilak who is for us and there is a lot of value for him in our camp.” Meanwhile, former player Mi and now with RCB, Tim David hoped to shoot his old franchise.
“It is a wonderful place to play Wankhede, (I like) the stick here, it’s a pleasant place to have as a house, (however) it’s no longer my field. I hope to have the chance to do damage there in the middle tomorrow evening,” he said.
