Mahendra Singh Dhoni leads CSK again in the 2025 IPL season after the regular skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad was excluded for the rest of the season with a fracture of the elbow.
This season has marked the first time that Dhoni returned as a captain since the IPL 2023 final in Ahmedabad, a memorable evening when Ravi will Jadeja struck six and four in the last two balls to secure the fifth IPL title of CSK. Having presented the post of captain in Gaikwad at the start of last season, Dhoni had taken a step back from leadership tasks but had continued to play a key role behind the scenes and with the bat.
Gaikwad, who directed the CSK in IPL 2025, suffered a stroke in his right forearm during the CSK match against the Royals of Rajasthan in Guwahati earlier this season. The scans later revealed a fracture of the elbow, ending his campaign.
Dhoni led CSK in a 239 game record, including all five victories of the franchise title. He had briefly renounced the role in 2022, putting the captain to Ravira Jadeja, but bad results led Dhoni to reassign control in the middle of the season.
