Muhammad Waseem Returns As UAE Captain For T20Is Against Bangladesh

Muhammad Waseem was reinstated as captain of the T20i water team for the next two -game series against Bangladesh in Sharjah, which should start this week later. Waseem had previously left the role in October of last year after having led the team in 26 games between 2023 and 2024, citing the desire to focus on its striker Odi. The series of two games scheduled for May 17 and 19 will be the first T20i appearance of water since December, when they won the Gulf T20 championship by defeating Kuwait in the final. The level of competition will increase considerably with Bangladesh as an adversary, compared to the previous tournament which featured Oman, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Qatar.

After the resignation of Waseem, Rahul Chopra, Rahul Chopra, resumed the captain. In particular, Waseem remains the most prolific T20i striker of the United Arab Emirates and has marked more T20i runs than any other player in the world since its beginnings in 2021. However, its recent form has dropped – it has not recorded half a century in ILT20 and its last fifty came in December against Qatar. In the ODIs, he only managed only half a century in the past two years.

The United Arab Emirates enter the Bangladesh series on the back of a difficult race in the League 2 Cricket World Cup in the Netherlands, where they suffered two defeats in the Netherlands and Scotland. Their only victory came against Scotland, highlighted by a century of Chopra and four counters by Simranjeet Singh, the left arm spinner.
