Novak Djokovic-Founded Player Union Launches Legal Blitz Against Tennis Governing Bodies

A tennis union co -founded by Novak Djokovic announced on Tuesday a series of legal actions intended for the sporting organs of sport, alleging “anti -competitive constraints and abusive practices”. The Professional Association of Tennis Players (PTPA) said that it was pursuing the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) in a series of actions in the United States, the United Kingdom and the European Union. The PTPA was set up by Djokovic and Canadian Vasek Pospisil in 2020. Twenty players were appointed as part of at least one of the actions.

“Pursuits expose systemic abuses, anti-competitive practices and a blatant contempt for the well-being of players who have persisted for decades,” said the PTPA statement. “ATP, WTA, ITF and ITIA operate as a cartel by implementing a number of draconian and intertwined anti -competitive constraints.”

“Tennis is broken,” said Ahmad Nassar, executive director of PTPA. “Behind the glamorous veneer that defendants promote, players are trapped in an unjust system that exploits their talent, removes their income and endangers their health and safety.”

The declaration indicated alleged abuse that they target.

He said that “collus” defendants, “repairing prices and repressing players’ income” forcing “an unbearable calendar” and operating the players financially.

The bodies show a “contempt for the players” by making them “compete in a heat at 100 degrees (Fahrenheit), endure matches that ended at 3 am and play with different and injured tennis balls”.

The PTPA also cited the image of property, the sponsorship restrictions and the “draconian system of classification points”.

The declaration also complained that tennis violates the “privacy rights” of the players.

“Players are subject to invasive research of personal devices, random night screening tests and interrogations without legal representation,” he said.

In addition to Djokovic and Pospisil, the PTPA Executive Council of seven members also includes players, Hubert Hurkacz, Ons Jabeur, Bethanie Mattek-Sands, Taylor Townsend and seized Zheng.

Australian Nick Kyrgios, Varvara Gracheva and the American of Reilly Opelka joined the case of the PTPA in the United States, while the French Corentin Moutet and Japan Taro Daniel joined the case in the United Kingdom.
