Once honored with gay bombay icon award: “deeply humiliating”
Founded in 1998, Gay Bombay has always worked to promote LGBTQ + rights in India by creating safe spaces for the community through workshops, film screenings, awareness readers and social events. Gay Bombay Icon Award recognizes people who made an important contribution to the progression of representation and queer rights in society.
Onir, the first openly queer filmmaker in India, has long been a pioneer to bring LGBTQ accounts to the foreground of the consumer Indian cinema. Through his films, his activism and his plea, Onir gave visibility to the stories and identities that had long been marginalized, breaking the stereotypes and pushing for inclusiveness both within the industry and beyond. His work was celebrated worldwide for his authenticity, her sensitivity and his courage.
Speaking of recognition, ONIR said: “To be honored by Gay Bombay, an organization that was an integral part of the Queer route in India, is deeply humiliating. When I started as a filmmaker, I often felt alone in the industry, transporting stories that many did not want to hear and that I faced a resistance to be unremits. Go.
