RB Leipzig Miss Out On Champions League For Only The Second Time In Nine Seasons

The best four hopes of RB Leipzig were destroyed with a draw in Werder Bremen on Saturday while Holstein Kiel and Bochum were relegated to the Bundesliga after the two fell at home. Leipzig had only missed the Champions League once in eight seasons since their first promotion in 2017, but fought against a Bremen team that pushes for a return to Europe after an absence of 15 years. The Xavi Simons of Leipzig got closer to the scoring, hitting the post with 68 minutes missing and forcing a goalkeeper Michael Zetter two minutes later.

The result means that Jurgen Klopp, the new football chief among the Red Bull owners, will supervise his first dead man without the promise of football in the Champions League.

Leipzig has to beat Stuttgart in his last match to have a hope of reaching the Europa League, while European Hopes in Bremen are now purely mathematical given their bad difference in goals.

Heidenheim’s 3-0 victory at Union Berlin on Saturday, thanks to an Adrian Beck splint and a goal from Jan Schoeppner, obtained at least the relegation barrage for the 16th place team.

Kiel, promoted to the elite for the first time this season, was to win to keep their hopes alive and marked first, but conceded twice to descend 2-1 against Freiburg.

The Rosenboom Lasse’s counterattack opener was canceled by an equalizer of Johan Manzambi just before half-time.

Lucas Hoeler replaced Manzambi at halftime and scored at the start of the second period, heading towards short distance to give the advance to Freiburg.

The victory puts Freiburg in pole position to play the Champions League for the first time next season.

Freiburg is four points from Borussia Dortmund, who has two games to play.

The passage of four years of Bochum in the Bundesliga ended after a defeat of 4-1 against Mypied, which marked by the German duo Nadiem Amiri and Jonathan Burkardt, with Phillipp Mwene and Paul Nebel.

Bochum, who had only two points in December but kept his hopes alive with a series of good results, including victories on Bayern Munich and Dortmund, only collected two points of their last eight games.

Later on Saturday, the Bayern champions will be presented with the Bundesliga Shield after their home match against Borussia Moenchengladbach.

Bayern officially won the title, their 34th, when the title champions Bayer Leverkusen were held in a 2-2 draw in Freiburg last Sunday.

Leverkusen welcomes Dortmund on Sunday in the last home match of coach Xabi Alonso with the club.
