Irish boxer John Cooney died at the age of 28 of injuries suffered in a fight on February 1, his promoter announced on Saturday. The Irishman had been in intensive care after having undergone an intracranial hemorrhage when he lost against the Welshman Nathan Howells in a superpum weight fight in Belfast last Saturday. The fight was stopped in the ninth round and Cooney was transported to the hospital. It was his first defense of the Celtic superpum weight title. “It is with a complete devastation that we must announce that after a week of struggle for his life, John Cooney unfortunately died,” said a statement published by promoter Mark Dunlop on behalf of the Cooney family.
“He was a very loved son, brother and partner and we will all need a life to forget how special he was. Rip John ‘The Kid’ Cooney.”
Cooney won the Celtic title with a first round of Liam Gaynor in Dublin in November 2023, but spent a year in the ring with a hand injury.
He returned in October with a victory on Tampela Maharusi.
