The cast includes Radhika Apte, Ashok Pathak, Chhaya Kadam, Smita Tambe and Navya Sawant. Written and directed by Karan Kandhari, produced by Alastair Clark, Anna Griffin and Alan McAlex, edited by Napoleon Stratogiannakis with cinematography by Sverre Sørdal.
The film’s synopsis reads as follows: Uma intends to adapt to life with her husband, Gopal. Living in a small room together in Mumbai, life is not easy for it, especially when Gopal disappears for hours, leaving it without money. Reluctantly, she learns to cook, using the neighbor’s locker room. But things change for the unhappy UMA after attending the wedding of the cousin of Gopal. Moda by a mosquito, she begins to feel sick, when she becomes pale and thin. Little by little, she experiences a voracious thirst for the blood of animals. However, as others fear it, Uma must learn to embrace this transformation or to face extinction.
“It started from the idea of what is going on the very first morning in an arranged wedding when the woman wakes up … And if the guy is going to work and she is right there and you have not manual to do it …”, explains Karan Kandhari. “This is really the fact that there is no manual for anything in life.”
Although it may seem serious, Kandhari infuses his narration with a unique spirit. “I mean, humor is the most important part of the narration for me,” he continues. “So if it’s not funny, I won’t write it.” He attributes the legendary silent movie star Buster Keaton as a major influence. “He was one of my heroes because he could do so much with these subtle gestures of the face. And just beyond, as a filmmaker, which he could do with a limited frame and body language and all that … it’s my humor.”
A curious mixture of marital realism, body horror and dark comedy is a story that explores the isolation of femininity, the strangeness of domestic life and hunger of freedom – both literal and metaphorical. He captures the discomfort and the absurdity of transformation, in the context of the dense urban life of Mumbai.
