The Spanish organization of the 2030 World Cup resigned on Wednesday after being accused of having repaired the process to decide which stadiums would host matches to promote a city, the Spanish media reported. Maria Tato withdrew from her post from the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) following a report published by the newspaper El Mundo, which said that the ratings for potential sites had been modified to promote Anoeta in San Sebastian, at the expense of Balaidos in Vigo.
“On June 25, 2024, Balaidos was one of the 11 sites (in Spain), but on June 27, the list was changed,” complained the mayor of Vigo, Abel Caballero, on X this week.
“It is extremely serious, we demand that they explain to us who changed it, why and with what criteria.”
The RFEF did not respond to a request for AFP comments.
The Federation announced last year that Spain would have 11 sites at the tournament, including the Camp Nou rebuilt stadium in Barcelona and Santiago Bernabeu from Real Madrid, while the co-animators of Portugal have three and Morocco six.
The RFEF has been affected by various crises in recent years.
Former president Luis Rubiales resigned disgrace in September 2023 after having forcibly embraced the star of the Women’s World Cup Jenni Hermoso on the lips after the triumph of Spain in Sydney.
His successor Pedro Rocha was suspended for having exceeded his duties after being initially arrived provisionally, Rafael Louzan taking the reins in December 2024.
