Sporting Lisbon Defend Portuguese Title With Final Day Win

Sporting Lisbon defended his Portuguese crown on Saturday with a 2-0 victory against Guimaraes to hold back his rivals Benfica on the last day of the season of Primeira Liga. Sporting and Benfica were level on points in their last game after a 1-1 draw tenly tense last weekend last weekend left the title race on a knife. Benfica needed the better Sporting’s result to triumph but shot 1-1 in Braga, even if even a victory would not have been sufficient because the side of Rui Borges triumphed and had the upper face.

Pedro Goncalves broke the dead end in the second half and the top scorer of the Viktor Gyokertes division won his 39th goal from the league to seal Sporting’s victory.

Manchester United coach Ruben Amorim led Sporting as last year and after his departure in November was replaced by Joao Pereira, who lasted only six weeks troubled before Borges took over.

Sporting won its 21st Primeira division title and could make it a national double while they would face Benfica next Sunday during the Portuguese Cup final.
