A Thai court sentenced the country’s first Olympic gold medalist on Thursday to just over three years in prison for the kidnapping and tried the rape of a teenager. Somluck Kamsing, now 52 years old, has become a national hero when he won the golden weight boxing gold at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. The Provincial Court of Khon Kaen has recognized Somluck guilty of kidnapping children for restless and attempted rape, before giving it an appeal and a deposit. “For the attempted rape by force and the taking of a person over the age of 15 but no more than 18 years for indecency, the actions of the first defendant constitute a single offense which violates the multiple laws,” said a press release.

Somluck filed a request for release on bond, which the court granted 300,000 baht ($ 9,000) when he continues his call.

The court ordered him to pay $ 5,000 in damages.

A 17-year-old girl filed a complaint in December 2023 against Somluck, saying that he had attacked her in a hotel in Khon Kaen, a city in the northeast of the kingdom.

Somluck, who also won boxing titles at Asian games from 1994 and 1998 in Hiroshima and Bangkok, respectively, denied allegations.

The police confirmed the local media at the time that Somluck met the teenager in a bar, where they stayed until 3:00 am, before the incident took place.
