The legendary striker of India Sunil Gavaskar thinks that Shreyas Iyer did not have enough credit for having directed Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as the Indian Premier League (IPL). Despite the KKR in their third IPL title, Shreyas was released by KKR before the 2025 IPL mega sale, where it was recovered by the Kings of Punjab (PBKS). KKR’s success has been widely attributed to the mentor Gautam Gambir, but Gavaskar thinks that it is the captain who deserves a large part of the credit instead of someone sitting in the canoe. Apart from his captain, Shreyas scored 351 points of 14 rounds at an average of 39 and with two fifty.

“He did not obtain the credit for the victory of the IPL last season. All the applause was given to someone else. It is the captain, who plays a major role in what is happening in the middle and not someone sitting in the canoe,” said Gavaskar on Star Sports.

This year, under Shreyas, PBKS is about to qualify for the playoffs. The team finished last time in the first four in 2014, finally losing against KKR in the final.

Gavaskar is happy to see Shreyas get all the praise this season, instead of the pbks Rickey Ponting head coach.

“You see this year he gets fair credit. No one gives all the credit to Ricky Ponting,” he added.
