The Police d’Avalahalli recorded a first information report (FIR) on May 3, 2025 under articles 351 (2) (criminal intimidation), 352 (1) (intentional insult to provoke a violation of peace) and 353 (public mischief) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The FIR accuses Nigam of making “reprehensible and emotionally provocative” statements which insulted the Kannadiga community and incited hatred among the linguistic groups of Karnataka.
CK Baba, police superintendent (Rural Bengaluru), confirmed that an inspector had been assigned to the question thoroughly. Nigam was invited to appear in front of the police in a week to respond to allegations. The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) also announced a “non-cooperation” campaign against the singer, President M Narasimhulu declaring that the organization would refuse to work with Nigam until it presents unconditional apologies to the inhabitants of Karnataka.
In an Instagram publication detailed on May 5, 2025, Nigam said that his comments were addressed to a small group of individuals, not the wider community of Kannadiga, which he described as “wonderful people”. He declared his deep link with Karnataka, noting that Kannada is his “second language” in his professional work and that he has always included Kannada songs in his performance in the state.
“I am 51 years old, in the second half of my life, and I have the right to offer myself when someone as young as my son threatens me directly in front of thousands of people,” wrote Nigam, adding that the aggressive behavior of the public disturbed the harmony of the concert. He also expressed his dismay at being “poorly judged”, emphasizing his patriotism and his aversion to the division based on language, caste or religion.
