The former spinner of the Indian Cricket team, R Ashwin, finally revealed what led to his international retirement halfway from the Border-Gavaskar trophy in Australia. Ashwin decided to announce his retirement after the third test game at Gabba – a decision that has surprised the cricket world. During an interaction on the Podcast Mike Testing 1, 2, 3 ‘, Ashwin said he wanted to retire after the test match against Bangladesh in Chennai where he marked a century and asked for a six gates. However, he decided to extend his career because of his good shape and his sensational series of results.
“To be very honest, I wanted to do it after my 100th test. And then I thought, ok, let me try it in the home season. Because, I mean, you play well and you get counters, you do shopping,” Ashwin told CSK Coach Michael Hussey in the Podcast.
“I thought it was logical to play a little. I had a lot of fun, but the hard sites that I had to put through the park, physically and mentally, one of the most important things that made me alleviate was family time,” he added.
Ashwin also said that not playing the first test game against Australia in Perth had made him an emotional number and that it also led him to consider retirement of international cricket.
“I thought I was probably closing with the Chennai test here. I ended up getting a six-checking transport and a hundred. So, it’s very difficult to stop when you manage very well. So I went with the series, and we lost against New Zealand. So, one after the other, it was just building. Ashwin.
“And when I did not start in Perth, it was like, okay, this whole circle continues.
