Hansal Mehta supports Kunal Kamra, remembers having been attacked by the workers of Shiv Sena
Mehta went to the social media platform to share her own painful experience more than two decades, when he was attacked and humidiated by loyalists of the same political party. He revealed how his office was taken by storm, vandalized, and he was physically attacked by members of the Shiv Sena, then uninhabited, on a single line of dialogue in his film.
“What happened with Kamra is unfortunately not new in the Maharashtra. I lived it myself. Twenty-five years ago, loyalists of the same political party (then individual) stormed my office. They vandalized it, attacked me physically, I blackened and forced myself to apologize publicly – by the line. The film had already been erased by the censorship board with 27 other cuts.
Describing the severity of the situation, Mehta remembers having been forced to make public apology in front of a massive crowd, with political leaders and the Mumbai police standing in a silent observation. Humiliation has left a lasting impact on him, not only physically but also emotionally and creatively. “In the place known as” apologies “, at least 20 political figures have arrived in full force to supervise what can only be described as a public shame – with 10,000 spectators and the Mumbai police looking in silence. This incident did not just die my body.
Stressing the need for a more civilian approach to disagreements, Mehta said: “No matter the depth of disagreement, regardless of strong provocation – violence, intimidation and humiliation can never be justified. We owe each other and we owe better.
What happened with Kamra is unfortunately not new in the Maharashtra. I lived it myself.

His statement comes in the wake of the recent attack on Kunal Kamra, where the members of the SHIV Sena vandalized the Comedy Club habitat in Mumbai following a political satire by the actor. While Kamra’s remarks aimed at political changes within the Maharashtra, the violent reaction of party workers triggered debates on freedom of expression and artistic expression. By establishing parallels between her own experience and that of Kamra, Hansal Mehta has revived discussions on the intimidation tactics used against dissident votes in the state.
