Tribeca Films has acquired Born so hungryThe powerful documentary produced by La Mondiale Purple Pebble Pictures from the PRIYANKA World icon Chopra Jonas and the Melbar entertainment group by Barry Avrich. Chronicle The life of the famous chef Sash Simpson, the film retraces his incredible journey of the abandonment of his child in India to become a famous culinary name in Canada.

Directed and produced by Barry Avrich, Born so hungry Capture the heartbreaking history of Simpson to survive by eating from garbage cans in the streets of Chennai, India, before being adopted at the age of eight by Canadian philanthropes Sandra and Lloyd Simpson – Families of families for the children’s orphanage. The documentary follows the emotional return of Simpson to India as he tries to reconnect with his roots and locate his biological family, guided only by low memories of childhood.
The film had its world premiere at the Palm Springs 2024 International Film Festival and was also presented at the Toronto Hot Docs Film Festival. According to the filmmakers, Born so hungry is “a raw story, true and important with a huge heart that deals with identity and cultural heritage”.
The production of the documentary alongside Chopra Jonas and Avrich is Mark Selby and Mary Rohlich. Jay Hennick, Selby and Avrich also serve as executive producers. The distribution agreement was negotiated by Melbar Entertainment, Avrich being represented by Iag. Sash Simpson, whose history forms the soul of the film, grew up with 31 brothers and sisters between Montreal and Toronto. At 14, he discovered his passion for food, finally becoming executive chef at the North 44 acclaimed restaurant. Today, he directs his own establishment – Sash Restaurant and Wine Bar – in the Summerhill district of Toronto.
